Ohio labor leader and Ohio Industrial Union Council officer. The bulk of the papers date from 1932 to 1940 and reflect Silvey's association with numerous cooperative, political, and labor organizations. Issues of note include the 1936 Columbus police raid on Silvey's home, the Nash-Wagner red baiting case of 1937, and the revokation of the Columbus Federation of Labor's charter in 1937. Norman Mattoon Thomas (1884-1968), was a leading American socialist, pacifist, author, and six-time presidential candidate on the Socialist Party of America ticket, between 1928 and 1948. Born in Marion, Ohio, he was a graduate of Princeton University, attended Union Theological Seminary, where he became a socialist, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1911.
